(Launch of the Regional Economic Development Strategic Plan)

Greater Moncton (NB), January 24, 2018 − The municipalities of Dieppe, Moncton, Riverview and 3+ Corporation, the steering organization for Greater Moncton’s economic development, have joined together to launch their first official Regional Economic Development Strategic Plan. The unprecedented event was held at Resurgo Place in the presence of major regional economic development stakeholders, strategic partners and dignitaries.

3+ Corporation’s Renewed Leadership

Opening statement by new 3+ Corporation Chair of the Board, Martin Haynes, acknowledged the Strategic Plan Steering Committee’s collaborative efforts: “The present strategy is a clear example of what our community can produce when challenged to make itself stronger. We will continue to build on the formula that helped us transform Greater Moncton into one of Canada’s leading communities in terms of economic success, population growth and quality of life. We’re at our best when we unite to work toward a common vision.” Also, Mr. Haynes paid homage to his predecessor, Jim Lockyer, in recognition of his hard work and devotion to the Greater Moncton community.

Recently appointed new Chair of the Economic Leadership Council (ELC), Bernard Lord paid a vibrant and thoughtful tribute to departing ELC Chair, Robert Irving. Mr. Lord further reiterated the importance of collaboration and its impact as a driver for regional economic growth.

Spotlight on the Strategic Plan

Together for prosperity – the Regional Economic Development Strategic Plan sets out the framework for driving Greater Moncton’s economy for the next five years (2018-2022). It presents specific actions to advance and to galvanize regional economic growth and vitality, such as: increasing the number of new business investment attraction projects, nurturing business expansion activities, augmenting new start-ups and developing new workforce-based initiatives that will lead to increasing business investment.

The Strategic Plan’s vision aspires to position Greater Moncton as the leading multicultural, innovative and creative urban centre in Eastern Canada. 3+ Corporation and its partners will impact this vision by coordinating and strengthening their economic development efforts.

The Strategic Plan also outlines the importance of boosting the business community’s confidence and restoring the regional economy to sustained growth. It will require stronger collaborative efforts and cooperation from all key stakeholders, especially in the innovation and immigration sectors, to thrive and insure the likelihood of success.

Tri-community’s Endorsement

The mayors of the tri-community shared their enthusiasm and expressed their support for the implementation of the Regional Economic Development Strategy: “More than ever before, the tri-community’s common economic development goals to attract, retain, and expand business activity and investments to the Greater Moncton Region demand a consolidated approach that is enhanced by pooled resources and expertise. Encouraging, cultivating and nurturing regional partnerships are the cornerstones of our communal economic development strategy. The tri-community is highly committed to collaborative efforts and aspires to ensure mutual success in creating jobs and harvesting new and innovative business for Greater Moncton,” said Yvon Lapierre (City of Dieppe), Dawn Arnold (City of Moncton) and Ann Seamans (Town of Riverview).

Backing from Key Stakeholders

“The Chamber of Commerce fully supports this renewed focus on sustained economic and community growth in the 3+ Plan. Collaboration and sharing the vision will be key to hitting the new targets and positioning Greater Moncton as Eastern Canada’s undisputed leader for the next 30 years,” said John Wishart, Interim CEO of the Greater Moncton Chamber of Commerce (GMCC).

“Opportunities NB (ONB) is committed to creating new wealth and opportunities in New Brunswick,” said ONB CEO Stephen Lund. “Greater Moncton is a recognized economic hub in Atlantic Canada and ONB is fortunate to collaborate with partners like 3+ on our mutual goal of creating economic prosperity. This renewed spotlight on regional economic growth is significant for Greater Moncton and for New Brunswick,” added Stephen Lund, CEO of Opportunities NB (ONB).

Key to Regional Success

David Campbell, President of Jupia Consultants and Co-Author of the Strategic Plan, explained the complex process of developing a five-year sustainable regional economic development strategy. “A key feature of the new economic development strategy is the high level of collaboration between 3+ Corporation, municipal economic development departments and other local partners such as Opportunities New Brunswick. This improved approach to working together will help ensure the region continues to grow and play its role as an urban economic engine in Atlantic Canada,” Mr. Campbell asserted.

Ready for Future Growth

3+ Corporation and the tri-community hope that this Regional Economic Development Strategic Plan will inspire all members of the Greater Moncton business community to become greater trailblazers and even prouder Greater Moncton entrepreneurs. “Their talent and hard work are making a difference as they lay a solid foundation for thoughtful leadership to measure up against any future economic challenges,” concluded Mr. Haynes.
