Atlantic Cancer Research Institute
Dr. Ouellette is currently the President and Scientific Director of the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute (ACRI) and the founding director of the Molecular Genetics and Sequencing Laboratory at the Dr Georges L Dumont University Hospital. After completing his BSc and MSc at Université de Moncton, Dr. Ouellette received both his MD and PhD from Université Laval in 1996. He received his Medical Residency from Université de Sherbrooke in 1998. Currently, he is adjunct professor of biochemistry at Université de Moncton and the RR Leger-NBHRF Chair in Cancer Research.
With ACRI, Dr. Ouellette began the first hospital-based research center in New Brunswick in 1998 and since then has assembled and leads a team of over 60 research scientists and staff. He has led numerous multi-million dollar large scale research initiatives in the past twenty years which allowed ACRI and partner institutions to recruit world class researchers to the region. These ambitious projects have led to the development of new cancer discoveries, technologies and their commercialization. Under his leadership ACRI has attracted over 75 million in research grants and investments which has spearheaded the emergence of health and biomedical research in the province. Recently, his efforts led to the construction the NB Center for Precision Medicine; the province’s first hospital research center. In this cutting edge facility, his team is focused on translating biological discovery into clinical application. The main focus of research involves multi-parameter genomic analysis of blood liquid biopsy and as a means for cancer diagnosis and treatment decision making.
He maintains numerous collaborations both with academia and private sector. He has been active on numerous advisory boards and committees including the Governing Council of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Science Advisory Board of Health Canada and the inaugural planning committee of the Terry Fox Research Institute. Presently, he served as Founding Board Member and later Chair of the Board of Directors of the New Brunswick Health Research Foundation, Co-chair of the Terry Fox Research Institute Atlantic Node as well as Board Member of the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation and Prostate Cancer Canada Research Advisory Board. He also served on the Board of Directors of 3+ for two terms.
