It all started with a few scribbles and notes on a cocktail napkin as Moncton businessman Bill Hennessey and associates mulled over the idea of building a unique hotel complex in the heart of the city’s downtown.
The result is the spectacular Canvas Moncton, Hilton’s first hotel in its exclusive tapestry collection in Canada, which opened in November 2019.
A total of 97 luxury hotel rooms combine with 55 impressive condos, a high-end wine outlet, inviting brewpub and warm, spacious gathering spaces to form a special address near Moncton’s entertainment, dining and shopping centres.
“We thought Moncton was the perfect place for a boutique hotel like this and we wanted to have a place where condo owners would enjoy the luxury and amenities that go with this lifestyle,” Hennessey said.
“We have come up with a hotel that offers an experience that is uniquely New Brunswick with the décor, artwork and hospitality of our staff,” he added.
“People have responded very positively and we’re expecting continued growth. We like the way downtown Moncton is developing and we’re going to be playing a big part of it.”
Canvas is well-equipped to handle business and social gatherings with four meeting rooms, with a total of 2,800 square-feet, on the second floor.
The main floor is anchored by the cafe with a cozy sitting area known as the Living Room, the Gahan House brew pub and the Alcohol New Brunswick outlet.
The top floors are the condos, most of which have patios. An impromptu concert on Canada Day saw the condo owners on their patios being entertained by local musicians.
“Everyone is becoming friends and there is a lot of hospitality among the people who live here,” Hennessey said. “The people who come into the hotel often remark about the hospitality they observe here.
“We’re Maritimes and we believe in hospitality. We’re offering it in a boutique hotel format that the whole staff (about 25 employees) believes in and is proud of every day.”
